About Me
Janelle Clausen is an award-winning reporter, writer, and recent graduate from Georgetown University's Democracy and Governance M.A. program where she studied the pillars of democratic governance and authoritarian entrenchment.
She interned at the International Republican Institute's MEL division, supported research at the Center for European Policy Analysis, and was an editor at the
Center for Democracy and Civil Society.
Janelle was previously a full-time reporter at The Island Now/Blank Slate Media covering education, business, local politics, the arts and other items of interest in Great Neck (see awards here). Before that, she was a part-time general assignment reporter for the Amityville Record, Babylon Beacon and Massapequa Post. Janelle
also interned at Newsday and News 12 Long Island. In between school and jobs,
she freelanced.
Janelle officially graduated, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in Journalism from Stony Brook University in January 2017. Her specialization was Public Policy and Public Affairs. While there, she was opinions editor of the Stony Brook Press, arts and features editor of the Stony Brook Independent, Vice President of the Society of Professional Journalists, and a contributor to Newsbreak en Español. In her last years in school, Janelle also contributed to two political broadcasts. As a part of Journalism without Walls, she also reported in Cuba (2016) and China (2014).
